Churchy Masks

So I woke up this morning and started getting ready for church, all at once I realized, God could care less if we're wearing dresses and ties or if we're in our pjs! God could care less where we are, or how we look. Then why do we go to such trouble? Why do we go to such great lengths when singing Jesus loves me in the shower makes him smile just as much as us going into church and singing weird hymns nobody knows? Because we aren't going to church just to praise God, no we're going to show off our church masks. We go in to show how 'perfect' our lives are. Mothers pretend to laugh and smile about the messes their kids make, fathers act pleased about being in church at all, kids smile and act polite to all, teens pretend to not be rebelling against their parents who are pretending their marriage isn't failing. So why the hell do we kid ourselves? We aren't going to church to learn about God, we're going so that the Johnsons from down the road will think that we're normal. We're going to show off our churchy masks.

  1. There is a lot of truth to this. Church was originally simply a community of people who supported and helped take car of each other. How can a group of people be uplifting to eachother if everyone is pretending to be perfect (or simply someone they're not)?
